Huzzah! Fans of “The Great” will be happy to hear that the show is returning, but Catherine II and her efforts to bring the Enlightenment to Russia will be saddened by this news. In the second season, everything from unexpected pregnancy cravings to crocodiles and war-mongering foes was thrown Catherine’s way… Meanwhile, the show continued to follow its protagonist’s transition from a daring but naive visionary to a ruler who must deal with the inevitable challenge of reconciling her idealistic views on the world with the harsh reality of what it takes to instill lasting social and political change.

It’s clear that “The Great” is no longer relevant to Catherine’s real-life after the season 2 finale changed the show’s subtitle from “An Occasionally True Story” to “An Almost Entirely Untrue Story.” However, we can only hope that this will heighten the suspense in Season 3 as we wait to see what happens next in alternate historical Russia that series creator Tony McNamara and his colleagues have imagined.

When and Where to Watch The Great Season 3

Season 3 of “The Great” will have ten episodes and be available exclusively on Hulu, as were seasons 1 and 2. Due to the pandemic, the show’s second season premiered on November 19, 2021, instead of May 15, 2020, as originally planned. As a result, the season-to-season gap between seasons 2 and 3 is likely to be shorter than previously anticipated. [Knocking on wood] Arrival in the latter half of 2022 isn’t impossible, but an early 2023 arrival seems more likely.

Another consideration is that: “As soon as the first episode of The Great” aired, executive producer Marian Macgowan revealed that the show was originally pitched for six seasons. Even if [Catherine] dies, we believe there’s enough material to keep us going until she does.” Season 3 may already have a rough outline in place if nothing else.

What We Think The Great Season 3 Will Be About

However, even though Catherine nearly killed Peter (she had inadvertently stabbed Peter’s double Pugachev instead), the kids appear to be staying together despite what happened to Joanna—a matter that Catherine will not forget anytime soon. To occupy the time between now and then, it appears Peter plans to work hard at being a good husband to her and a loving father to their son Paul. Although she’s more aware of the chasm between her romantic and philosophical ideals and the messy reality of human nature, Catherine hasn’t given up on changing Russia for the better.

Other loose ends from “The Great” season 2 include what will happen to Merial now that Catherine has her arrested — after Mariel told her the truth about Joanna — as well as Arkady, Tatyana, and Grigor now that they’ve all been implicated in Joanna’s death (who, unlike Mariel, were conspiring against Catherine). Georgina, on the other hand, has persuaded Catherine that she has joined the Enlightenment and will have to find new ways to undermine the Empress without the help of her fellow nobles. It’s also worth noting that Archie’s still struggling with his faith, but he no longer plots against Catherine, who no longer plans to kill him. However, the same cannot be said of Orlo.) Progress?

What We Know About The Great Season 3 Cast and Crew

For the third season, most of the main cast from seasons 1 and 2 of “The Great,” including Catherine’s Elle Fanning, Peter/Pugachev Nicholas Hoult Sacha Dhawan, Velementov Douglas Hodge Belinda Bromilow Belinda Bromilow Adam Godley Charity Wakefield will return (Georgina). Among the cast members returning are Phoebe Fox (Maria), Gwilym Lee (Grigor), Bayo Gbadamosi (Arkady), and Florence Keith-Roach (Tatyana). However, their roles may be reduced or limited to fewer episodes, depending on what Catherine has in mind for them and how quickly she and Merial reconcile. (If they do, that is.) The possibility exists that Gillian Anderson might appear as Joanna at some point in the series. We can’t rule out Catherine having a similar conversation with her deceased mother if Peter can get a visit from his deceased father (Jason Isaacs).

Season 3 will see McNamara return to his role as showrunner and executive producer, while Colin Bucksey, who directed several episodes in seasons 1 and 2, is expected to return as director. Nathan Barr, the show’s composer, is expected to return to continue composing the show’s music (which, up to this point, has been a pitch-perfect blend of regal and irreverent musical themes). However, it’s not clear who will be in charge of the debauchery and comical violence that Catherine the Great’s life will be subjected to when the series resumes.
