Singer Susanna Hoffs Of The Bangles Has Released Her First Romantic Novel, Titled This Bird Has Flown

Jane Start’s existence is chaotic. This Bird Has Flown is the first novel by Susanna Hoffs, a singer and guitarist who rose to popularity in the 1980s as a member of the band the Bangles. The novel follows the story of Jane, who is charming, humorous, and unlucky. It’s a clever romantic comedy that shows Hoffs’s great writing skills aren’t limited to songs.

You can also read about the wealth of other celebrities:

At the beginning of the novel, Jane is getting ready for a performance in LV. Though she isn’t exactly delighted about playing a private party, she is trying to see the good side: “The pay tonight would mean a deposit on an apartment, and a few months’ rent, a chance to make another artsy record, even if no one bothered to listen to it. It would matter to me. If I could ever write another song again, that is.”

At the concert, she appears, “I was wearing a tiny piece of fabric that I was trying to pass off as a dress. It was half-hidden under my ex-old boyfriend’s cardigan, which was the only thing I took from him when he left me for a 23-year-old lingerie model. Two months back.” Pippa, her longtime friend and manager, breaks the news that she will only be performing one song (her only hit) to an audience consisting of “rowdy frat-bro types,” with a karaoke track playing in the background. And she’s supposed to sing in a hot pink wig.

Pippa requests that Jane accompany her to London after the performance so that they can decompress and create new music. When Pippa was unable to make the flight, Jane was sat next to Tom Hardy, a professor of literature at Oxford. During the long flight, they talk about books and music, and Jane can’t help but kiss the handsome professor when she can’t stop herself.

Jane stays in London for a while, mourning the one she believes may have slipped away, till she receives a text message from him inviting her to Oxford. They hit it off, and she ends up living essentially with him while attending his school and becoming friends with his coworkers. You can see the official tweet by CBS Mornings below.

Jonesy, who wrote her one and only song, asks her to perform at a special event alongside him at Royal Albert Hall, giving her a boost in the professional arena. Jane isn’t sure she wants to do it because she has had stage fright for most of her career.

And she’s getting used to the idea of living in the background with her new eternal flame: “Could the life I wanted be the one with Tom in England? A folk singer’s life is to write, record, and play in small venues.” But with Tom, things become more complicated when Jane discovers he is hiding something that changes how she feels about him.

Jane is a memorable protagonist, which is crucial to the success of novels like This Bird Has Flown. She has a lot of depth and is aware of her own flaws and anger over how hard it is for her to get over her ex-boyfriend. She makes fun of herself, but she knows she’s good. Hoffs’ portrayal as a friend rather than a victim is essential to the novel’s success.

Hoffs’ This Bird Has Flown is an ode to music and a touching love story about Jane and Tom, but it’s about more than just them.  At one point, Jane thinks, “I’ve never wanted to be in the spotlight. I’ve always just wanted to make music and try to give other people what music has always given me. An outpouring of love, of expression, and of connection.” This novel is a stunning example of such an expression.
