It’s hard to think of a character that could properly offer the Man of Steel a meaningful challenge in fair combat due to his almost unlimited array of powers and bottomless power reserve. On the other hand, Thor, one of Marvel’s mightiest Avengers, might have what it takes to defeat Superman.

Thor Vs Superman: Who is Stronger?

Is Thor More Powerful Than Superman?
In comparison to other superheroes, Superman can use his capabilities in a wider variety of situations. On the other hand, Thor is no stranger to battles with Frost Giants or energy blasts from the godlike Celestials. Superman’s powers could inflict some discomfort on Thor, but they wouldn’t be enough to defeat him.
Thor is an Asgardian superhuman with many talents, including the ability to control lightning. As the God of Thunder, he has the power to alter the weather and direct magical bolts of lightning. Thor’s lightning powers are nothing to scoff at, but they might be particularly useful against Superman.
Can Thor Beat Superman?
The fact that Superman is vulnerable to magic is often overlooked, yet it could be the deciding factor in Thor’s victory over him. This is one of the key reasons why the magical hero Shazam has been able to defeat Superman in the past. There is some sort of magical energy invested in Thor. Because of this ability, he can spin Mjolnir, his hammer, faster than the speed of light. Because of his magical skills, he is always able to keep his strength.
The ultimate test of Superman’s mettle could come from an opponent who exploits one of his flaws, rendering his superior strength moot. Superman could easily defeat Thor, but the God of Thunder’s attacks would severely wound Kal-El. In a fight with Thor, Superman’s incredible speed would allow him to land multiple blows before the Asgardian could unleash a lightning storm.
But even in friendly fights, Superman rarely uses his full strength and speed. Of course, Thor is still focused on victory, even when the stakes are merely symbolic. With that frame of mind and his magical talents, Thor may perhaps overwhelm Superman before he has a chance to defend himself.
Can Superman Beat Thor? He Already Has Once!
Superman’s victory over Thor in their epic showdown defied all expectations. In 2003, in JLA/Avengers by Kurt Busiek and George Perez, the Marvel and DC Universes had their most significant encounter to date. The first issue of that crossover concluded with Thor throwing Mjolnir at Superman’s face as the League and the Avengers squared off.
When the two teams went to war in the next issue, the battle between Superman and Thor was front and center. Both heroes gave it their all in the Savage Land as their teams sought to claim the Cosmic Cube as part of a competition spanning universes.
Thor impressively withstood Superman’s entire power as they exchanged full-force strikes with one other using their heat vision. But just as Thor was about to strike Superman out with his hammer, Superman knocked Thor down with one more punch.
After defeating Thor, Superman declared that his ally was the most formidable opponent he has ever faced in combat, prompting Iron Man, Hercules, Wonder Man, Vision, and She-Hulk to pile on him for killing one of their own. Even though Thor is one of the most powerful deities in the Marvel Universe, he was defeated by Superman in the end.
