Star Ocean: The Second Story R, a recreation of the original game, will be released on November 2 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.
The game, which was announced at June’s Nintendo Direct, is a complete remake of the original, complete with updated pixel art rendered in a style that blends 2D and 3D perspectives.
The science fantasy role-playing game follows the story of Claude C. Kenny and Rena Lanford as they become entangled in a malicious conspiracy that takes place across the galaxy. In addition, the players will meet more than a dozen people who could join their cause.

The combat unfolds in real-time and features graphics reminiscent of Octopath Traveller. The trailer features all the hallmarks of RPGs from the 1990s, like airships and 2D villages.

IGN’s 8/10 review of the original game said, “Star Ocean is a one-of-a-kind game. It’s so full of optimization that it’s bound to be one of the classics for PlayStation.”
In addition to the new 2D Mario game Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a WarioWare Switch game and a remaster of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon was also announced in the latest Nintendo Direct.
