Shetland concluded on a cliffhanger last night, with two of the show’s most prominent characters being arrested and charged with murder.
Duncan Hunter (Mark Bonnar) and Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall) were both falsely accused of the murder of Donna Killick (Fiona Bell), a season four villain whose final act was to implicate both men in her death.
Over the course of the season, Duncan, Jimmy’s stepfather’s birth father, had gradually become friends with Jimmy, developing an odd friendship.
However, Duncan confessed that he assisted Donna in taking her own life because of their close connection, even though she had written an open letter to her lawyer claiming that the two men had planned to kill her.
Immediately after Duncan surrendered, the police also arrested Jimmy.
There is only one big issue remaining: will Shetland return for a seventh season after such a huge cliffhanger?

Shetland season 7 Release Date
Since the BBC ordered seasons six and seven in December of 2019, Shetland has already been renewed for a seventh season.
Season six of COVID was postponed due to the presence of COVID-19, but production on season seven has already begun, so we can expect it to appear in 2022.

Every major significant character from the Shetland cast appears to be returning for season seven.
They include Douglas Henshall as DS Alison ‘Tosh’ Macintosh and Mark Bonnar as DS Jimmy Perez, among others (who was revealed to be pregnant in the season six finale).
