From his first days in high school, Shawn Kemp was destined for greatness. He scored the most points in Elkin County history and broke the single-game and single-season scoring records at Concord High School.
In 1987, he enrolled at the University of Kentucky, but his poor SAT score kept him from participating in any sports. He was forced to drop out of school because of the accusation that he had pawned off a teammate’s gold necklace. While at a community college, he decided to enter the 1989 NBA Draft.

He was the youngest NBA player at the time of his selection (17th overall) by the Seattle SuperSonics. Kemp overcame early adversity and began to realize his full potential.
