Sarah Hyland Openly Discusses Her Kidney Illness
Sarah Hyland recently asserted that she was suffering from Kidney dysplasia. Because of the energy drain caused by her chronic illness, Sarah Hyland claims that she doesn’t recall shooting full episodes of Modern Family.
Kidney dysplasia, a disorder in which the kidneys don’t fully mature in the womb, was present when Hyland was born. She received her first transplant at the age of 21 using her father’s kidney. At age 26, she underwent a covert second kidney transplant using her younger brother’s kidney after her body rejected the first one. She underwent nearly 15 procedures in total for her kidney ailment, and those were only transplants.
Hyland underwent both transplants while co-starring in the ABC sitcom as Haley Dunphy. She discussed her frequent experience of being in agonizing pain and fatigue on the program.
She doesn’t recall filming any episodes of Modern Family because she was asleep during those times. The episode where Haley asked Luke for money and he’s like, “Don’t worry, I’ve got it on ice. It’s in the freezer or something,” the entire episode she was asleep.

The same thing happened when she was taking steroids to stay alive, which made her face fat. She had to handle speculations that she was pregnant as well as public criticism that she was “fat”.
