The fate of the medical license of an Ohio plastic surgeon who is suspected of livestreaming patients’ procedures online is not expected to be decided until July.

In hearings, Dr. Katharine Roxanne Grawe, better known as “Dr. Roxy” to her thousands of social media followers, is attempting to prevent state regulators from permanently revoking her license to practice medicine.

On November 18th, the Ohio State Medical Board voted to suspend Grawe’s medical license after “clear and convincing” evidence emerged that her continuing practice posed “a danger of immediate and serious harm to the public.” At least four women are suing Grawe, claiming that they experienced difficulties as a result of their procedures performed by Grawe.

The medical board mentioned a case in which a surgeon performed liposuction on a patient’s belly while gazing and talking to the camera. After getting a perforated colon, the patient ended up in the ER because he was losing brain function due to poisons in his blood.

Also, the doctor’s attorney claimed that the livestreams were meant to educate patients about the procedure and that patients were aware of the hazards involved. Below we have detailed all the information there is to know about the live streaming of plastic surgeries by Dr. Roxy.

In spite of repeated warnings from state medical authorities, Dr. Roxy kept livestreaming patient procedures, and even fielded questions from viewers while she was operating. In doing so, the medical board has suspended her for malpractice.

In the suspension which was emailed to Grawe, the secretary of the medical board warned him at least twice in the past four years about the need of protecting patient privacy while posting patient images or videos online.

The board secretary recommended that Grawe take courses in professionalism, ethics, and plastic surgery complications in September 2021. She was required to show proof of course completion alongside reflective writing about what she had learned and how it will inform her future work.

The board claims Grawe continued filming and streaming live medical procedures on some patients after she finished the required continuing education courses through around October 14. Dr. Roxy license has been suspended and some patients have complained against her.

The notice to Grawe specifies that the productions will feature aspects including, but not limited to, preoperative photos, preoperative interviews with patients about their bodies, livestreams of procedures, postoperative still images of patients taken in the operating room, and the cost of the procedure. During some videos/live-streams you engage in dialogue to respond to viewers’ online questions while the surgical procedure remains actively ongoing. The attorney of Grawe also defended the surgeon.

Sabrina Sellers, Grawe’s attorney at the medical board hearing this week remarked that patients who underwent elective operations did so despite knowing the dangers. The social media broadcasts, as explained by Sellers, were educational in nature and to allow her patients to feel comfortable with her prior to coming to her office.

This week’s proceedings will result in a referral to the full medical board from an examiner. In the meantime, please visit our website frequently.
