Melissa Joan Hart Claims She Assisted Children In Evading A Shooting In Nashville

Melissa Joan Hart has told the Washington Post that she assisted children in evading a sh00ting in Nashville. She said in an Instagram video posted Tuesday that she was on her way to her children’s school for conferences when a gunman opened fire at a Nashville school on Monday.

Hart claimed that she and her husband, Mark Wilkerson, escorted a class of kindergarteners across a highway. Hart, on the verge of tears, said, “We helped all these tiny, little kids cross the road and get their teachers over there.”

Hart’s words come after a sh00ting at Covenant School, a private Christian school for elementary through middle schoolers, in which three children and three adults lost their lives. Audrey Elizabeth Hale, 28, was identified as the sh00ter and later assassinated by police.

Hart, now 46 years old, is famous for her roles in the sitcoms “Clarissa Explains It All” (1991–1994) and “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch” (1996–2003). Since then, she has made guest appearances on other programs and films, and she also hosts the podcast What Women Binge.

Hart mentioned in her video that this was the second time her family had to deal with being so close to a school sh00ting. When the Sandy Hook Elementary School sh00ting occurred in Connecticut in December 2012, her children were attending a school not far from where the victims were located. Although Hart claimed that none of her three children were at school on Monday, she and Wilkerson were on their way to a meeting at the school when they stopped to aid students who were trying to escape through the woods from Covenant.

During a press conference on Monday, John Drake, the chief of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, said that some children from Covenant had fled into the woods. WSMV has obtained surveillance footage showing bystanders crossing the street following the sh00ting.

Hart told that she and Wilkerson helped a pregnant woman find her children, who were students at Covenant, by taking her to a fire station. Hart’s managers did not respond to requests for comment from The Washington Post, however, she revealed to NewsNation that she and Wilkerson assisted a pregnant woman in reuniting with her children by driving her to the fire station.

The Nashville school shooting

Hart told the news network, “In 2012, I had just given birth to my third child, and I had two kids in school, and I’m that mom, you know, about a decade before.”

Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney, and Hallie Scruggs, all 9 years old, were among the victims on Monday, along with staff members Mike Hill, 61, Katherine Koonce, 60, and Cynthia Peak, 61.

Hart has previously argued for stricter gun laws. She supported firearm control by marching with Moms Demand Action in May of 2016. Hart announced on Facebook in March 2018 that she and her son would be attending the March for Our Lives rally in Washington, DC to advocate for stricter gun control laws.

Multiple Nashville musicians have joined the chorus of celebrities condemning gun violence since Monday’s shooting. On Instagram, singer Jessie James Decker revealed that her children go to a school just two miles away from Covenant. Margo Price, another musician, tweeted her disapproval of Republican Tennessee governor Bill Lee.

On Instagram, Hart explained that she had actually recorded her reaction video on Monday, but that it was “too raw” to post at the time. She was at a loss for words as she finished the message to her 1.7 million followers.

“I don’t know what to say anymore,” Hart said. “It is just — enough is enough. And just pray for the families.”
