As a result of its Scandinavian roots, Marcella was originally broadcast on the British television network ITV and features mostly British actors. Hans Rosenfeldt, the show’s creator, is Swedish-born, but the series is also firmly rooted in the Nordic noir subgenre as a whole. For the most part, the title refers to a crime novel in the vein of The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo. In addition to simply focusing on crime, Nordic noir stories tend to explore the dark psychologies of their protagonists and antagonists.

As Detective Sergeant Marcella Backland (Anna Friel) infiltrates a Northern Irish crime family disguised as Keira May Devlin, she investigates several serial killers throughout Marcella’s three seasons. When Marcella is working to stop the series’ rogues’ gallery of criminals, dark memories from her past come back to haunt her. The show’s leading lady, despite her troubling past, is still a compelling presence.

The third season of Marcella premiered on Netflix in June 2020, before airing on ITV in early 2021. There is already a season 4 in the works because the season ended with a cliffhanger. The fourth season of Marcella may or may not be produced, but that is still up in the air.

Is Marcella Season 4 even confirmed?

Marcella season 4 may not happen at all based on the current situation. That may come as a surprise to viewers who are caught up on the series’ current three seasons, given that its most recent episode blatantly set up a new chapter for Marcella. However, Friel explained in an interview with Hello Magazine that the series was intended to be a trilogy at its start. That said, the ending of the third part of the trilogy directly contradicts that statement. In an apparent attempt to have their cake and eat it too, the series’ creators have completed their planned trilogy while also hinting at the continuation of the series.

Each new season of Marcella so far has been released after roughly two years. The earliest a fourth season of Marcella could be released would be in 2022 if an announcement is made. A fourth season might happen much later, too. If, as Rosenfeldt has claimed, a new season 10 years from now isn’t out of the question, then season 4 could last until 2032.

Where could the plot go in Marcella Season 4?

Towards the end of Marcella’s third season, she has finished her undercover work in Northern Ireland with the Maguire crime family. In doing so, she absconds with 24 million euros of what was once their money. Marcella and Katie, the infant daughter of Maguire crime family associate Stacey, who died in the season finale, fly out of Northern Ireland on a private plane in the episode’s final moments. A call from an unknown number reveals his knowledge of her true identity as she attempts to flee. Meanwhile, an airport employee calls her “Miss Hart,” evidence of a new alias.

Season 4 of Marcella will most likely pick up with Marcella, likely known to her new associates as Miss Hart, in her and Katie’s new country of residence. Trouble will most likely follow her there in the form of whoever was on the other end of the phone call in the season 3 finale. Fans learning the identity of that caller will ultimately depend upon the series’ return for a fourth season.

Marcella Season 4 Might Not Happen. Here’s Why

Anna Friel’s troubled detective hasn’t had an easy ride in the British series Marcella (available internationally on Netflix), but season 3 ended on a surprisingly happy note — albeit with a bit of a twist. DS Marcella Backland went undercover in Northern Ireland in the most recent batch of episodes, leaving her London life behind. Even though Marcella was pretending to be “Keira May Devlin” for this third season, her old life caught up with her, and the British show was full of surprises once again.

After her old colleague, DCI Rav Sangha also tried to bring her back home, Marcella only wound up getting in deeper with the Maguire crime family. And by the time the season wrapped up its eight-episode run, Marcella had weirdly found a form of redemption by saving baby Katie. After the former police officer’s daughter, Juliet was tragically killed in the line of duty, she was a sort of consolation prize. But audiences are already desperate to know whether season 4 is in the works after the startling ending — which saw Marcella leave on a private jet with Katie. Did we mention she’d stolen £24 million from the now-slaughtered crime family? What a nice little nest egg.

Marcella was always meant to be a trilogy

Season 3 ended with Marcella answering a phone call from an unknown caller who claimed to know her true identity, so you could be forgiven for thinking that season 4 of Marcella is already in the works. Marcella Backland/Keira May Devlin is now in an unknown country, going by “Miss Hart.” Will this be another alternate personality for Marcella to grapple with in a future season? Well, that depends on how much audiences enjoy the series because the show was planned as a trilogy. It was Anna Friel who explained this to Hello Magazine “While a trilogy was always planned, the conclusion of the third season is still up in the air. I suppose it all boils down to how well it does with the local audience.”

This is a show that has been panned by audiences and critics alike for its questionable portrayal of mental health issues and some of the show’s more unbelievable elements (such as the unhinged season 2 finale). However, Friel’s performance has been heavily praised, even garnering an Emmy for her role as the strong female lead. Marcella may have to deal with new criminals in an exotic location if the open ending is enough to warrant additional episodes. According to Radio Times, Friel even proposed that her character “It’s possible that I will end up in Cuba. Anything was possible for her.”

So, for the moment, there’s been no word on whether Marcella has been canceled or renewed for season 4. British network ITV may begin developing additional chapters of the story for Netflix, given the excitement surrounding the show.
