Cawthorn came in second place in the North Carolina 11th Congressional District Republican primary in March 2020, trailing only Lynda Bennett. Bennett, however, did not earn a majority of the vote, therefore a second round of voting was necessary. The media labelled Cawthorn’s eventual landslide victory in the June runoff as an upset.

In the months leading up to the November elections, Cawthorn made a number of contentious statements and choices. Without providing evidence, he claimed that a major cartel operated along the Texas border, kidnapping children and selling them into slavery.

He also created an anti-journalist Tom Fielder website over the course of his campaign. Fielder had written several articles investigating Cawthorn.

Even after assuming office, Cawthorn continued to make and do provocative things. While spreading rumours of fraud in the 2020 election, he voted against certifying the Electoral College’s decision. Later, though, he claimed to have accepted the findings.

Cawthorn labelled Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky a “thug” at the outset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Furthermore, he said that many Washington officials were drug users and sexual perverts.

After all, Cawthorn considered himself more a messenger of the people than a legislator, and he made sure to spend his time in office emphasising communication rather than legislation. He ran for reelection in 2022, but state Senator Chuck Edwards defeated him.

Cawthorn denied these claims, claiming that many of the students in question did not know him. BuzzFeed News published an article in February 2021 in which 20 sources said that Cawthorn had a history of sexually harassing female students at his university.

In May of 2022, a video surfaced online showing Cawthorn nudely gesticulating at another man’s face while in bed. Cawthorn claims that his pals filmed him being crude in an old video that is now being shared online in an effort to blackmail him.
