Dern began training in martial arts alongside her parents at the tender age of three. She had already reached the level of expertise required to compete in the adult division by the time she was 14 years old. After her parents split in 1996, Mackenzie was able to keep things amicable with both of them.
Under the banner of the Legacy Fighting Alliance, Dern competed in her first professional MMA bout. At Legacy FC 58, her first professional bout, she won by unanimous decision. Up until October 2017, she was actively engaged in LFA campaigns. She fought four times within the time frame and won every one of them.
