Luffy of One Piece Versus Goku of Dragon Ball: Can Gear 5 Defeat a Saiyan?

Luffy Vs Dragon

Luffy Vs Dragon

Monkey D. Luffy of One Piece and Son Goku of Dragon Ball are the two most powerful main characters in the history of the shonen manga genre. Similarities exist between these two series’ main protagonists, who are both powerful mystic warriors. Luffy’s power has recently been amplified with the advent of Gear Fifth, but whether or not he could hold his own against the divine might of a Saiyan in a one-on-one confrontation with Goku remains to be seen.

As a result of the Kaido struggle, where Luffy first unleashed the full potential of his Devil Fruit, he was able to quickly and easily grasp his new Gear Fifth skills. Gear Fifth enables Luffy to inflate his limbs and muscles simultaneously, like in Gear Third and Gear Fourth, but without expanding his body size. Because of this synergy, every part of his body has become extraordinarily pliable and stretchy. The first time he used it, Luffy grew a few of his body parts to kaiju proportions and tossed Kaido around like a rag doll. Many other, lesser abilities also benefit from this elasticity.

As witnessed when he defended the arena from one of Kaido’s blows, Luffy has the ability to affect the physical environment around him, transferring his rubbery nature to inanimate objects. There are, however, bounds to this power. Luffy’s ability to use Gear Fifth is reliant on the Devil Fruit, which causes him to lose energy at an alarming rate.

However, when people hear the name Son Goku, they automatically think “prodigy.” A trained martial arts master from an other planet, he enjoys many advantages that Luffy does not. In battle, his extraterrestrial enhancements make him stronger and more resilient. In addition to being able to efficiently use ki in battle, Goku’s Saiyan heritage also allows him to access and use augmented versions of himself.

Goku is one of the most formidable heroes in the Dragon Ball franchise because of his incredible speed and skill with ki power attacks like the Kamehameha. Goku would be able to defeat Luffy’s Gear Fifth if he were to combine his normal strength with his Saiyan skills.

Thus far, Luffy has demonstrated four main Gear Fifth moves. The Gum-Gum Giant and the Gum-Gum Jump Rope are the two primary methods. Both the exponential growth of Luffy’s stature and his opponent’s shrinking to the size of a jump rope are examples of severe elastic changes that neither party has to worry about timing.

Goku’s alien durability would make him more than capable of countering Luffy’s Jump Rope method, since he has been seen to move mountains much heavier than the stretchy kaiju form he assumes in the series. Luffy’s talents are still developing and have more potential to be unleashed, which is why Gear Fifth can’t fight a Saiyan at the moment. Already, Goku has surpassed even Luffy’s peak performance in terms of power and expertise.

Although Luffy’s Gear Fifth skills are great, they pale in comparison to Son Goku’s proficiency. It’s true that Gear Fifth has been employed successfully in combat up until now, but that’s because it hasn’t been used against super beings like Goku. While Goku steadily grows in strength, Luffy is still discovering and pushing the boundaries of his own potential. Unfortunately, even with Gear Fifth, Luffy would lose this round to Dragon Ball’s Goku.

However, it would be irresponsible to write out the One Piece hero and the potential for future Gear abilities to make them more even.
