He quickly amassed 4 million Vine followers and began making money off of the platform by making commercials for brands like HBO, Pepsi, and Virgin Mobile.

In 2015, his short videos earned him hundreds of thousands of dollars, and he was ranked as the tenth most prominent Vine personality. As soon as Vine was shut down, Paul uploaded his videos to YouTube.

Suicide Forest Controversy

On December 31, 2017, Paul released to his YouTube account a video he shot in Aokigahara, Japan, at the foot of Mount Fuji. Many people have gone to this location to end their lives, therefore the locals have given it the nickname “suicide forest.” Paul’s footage featured a body dangling from a tree.

Other Controversies

In early February of 2018, YouTube stopped showing ads on Paul’s channels due to his “habit of behavior.” YouTube was alluding to Paul’s participation in the Tide Pod challenge, his video in which he “jokingly gave it CPR” to a fish he pulled from his pond, and his video in which he used a taser pistol on two dead rats. During that time, Paul did not earn any money from advertising or website visitors.

After two weeks, YouTube started showing adverts on his channel again. However, his channel and its material were ineligible to appear on the trending tab on YouTube for the full ninety days while he was on probation.

After that, Paul mentioned in passing on his podcast in January of this year, “Is it men only this month, or what? For the next month, we’re going to try to live as openly gay people.” Paul’s comments were met with tremendous backlash, with many people taking offense at his insinuation that being gay is a lifestyle choice.

With the second fight being broadcast by boxing streaming service DAZN USA, the fighters likely made more than $3 million each.
