On Sunday, Matt Fitzpatrick won the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head with a heartfelt performance after defeating defending champion Jordan Spieth in a playoff, as reported by CNN.
After a thrilling final day of competition, the Englishman and the American remained tied at 17 under par heading into the third playoff hole, when the Englishman broke the tie with a remarkable approach shot to within inches of the cup and tapped home for eagle to win his second PGA Tour championship.
Last year at the US Open in Brookline, he won his first after a final round that was just as close. When his final tee shot went into the bunker, it was a late fright for the 28-year-old, and it was equally tense when Spieth’s birdie putts on the first two playoff holes looked like they were going in.

Given the tournament’s status as a designated event on the PGA Tour, his victory would vault him to a career-high No. 8 in the world and earn him $3.6 million of the tournament’s $20 million total.
It’s also a victory for Fitzpatrick at a venue that holds significant meaning for him. The Englishman may have been raised in Sheffield, but annual vacations to Hilton Head Island made victory at Harbor Town Golf Links a lifelong goal.
“I think I can retire now,” Fitzpatrick joked to the press.
“This one is the one that I’ve always wanted to win. [Of] any golf tournament – other than the majors, of course – there isn’t a higher one on my list than to win this one, and that’s the truth.
