Cash: The Autobiography claims that the artist was diagnosed with Shy-Drager syndrome in 1997, revealing that he has been ill for some time. After falling off the stage during a performance, Johnny told his fans he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
It was later determined that Johnny Cash had autonomic neuropathy connected with diabetes, which meant that he could no longer tour, but according to Robert Hillburn’s book Johnny Cash: The Biography, this Shy-Drager syndrome was also a misdiagnosis.
Later on, on May 15th, 2003, at the age of 73, June died as a result of difficulties she experienced during heart valve replacement surgery.
