John Beasley, 79, has passed away. NBA player and grandson Malik Beasley posted the news of his grandfather’s passing to Instagram. In one of the three images he posted, Malik and his grandfather are shown playing basketball together.
He dedicated the photo, with the message , “To the man who put the Beasleys on the map.”
“I can’t believe this day came, I honestly thought you were invincible and you still are,” Malik added. “You taught me my first golf lesson, you taught me how to handle the big lights and success… damn grandpa I wanted to see you this summer… this is tough for me man.. I’m glad you were at least sleep… you are in a better place and I know you will be looking after me.”

John Beasley, who played the beloved school bus driver Irv Harper on The WB drama Everwood and the beloved father Barton Bellentine to Cedric the Entertainer’s character in the TV Land comedy The Soul Man, passed away on Tuesday. He was 79.
According to Tyrone Beasley, Beasley’s son, he passed away in an Omaha, Nebraska, hospital. Before he suddenly deteriorated, he had been undergoing liver tests.
Beasley shined as an assistant coach in Rudy (1993) and as the retired minister Charles Blackwell in Robert Duvall’s The Apostle (1997).

Recently, he was seen in Chicago in a musical version of Nicholas Sparks’ 1996 novel The Notebook, which was adapted for the big screen in 2004 with James Garner, Gena Rowlands, Ryan Gosling, and Rachel McAdams.
According to his son, Beasley was cast as Garner and was planning to travel to New York in August to participate in a workshop performance of the musical while the producers decided on a venue.
In an interview last year, he said, “To be a working artist is the highest calling, and I love going wherever it takes me. If I never got to Broadway, I would still feel I’ve had a pretty successful career.”
In Omaha, he founded and directed the John Beasley Theater and Workshop for a total of 13 years. In the year 2020, he said, “We changed the lives of a lot of people just through the theater.”
Beasley didn’t start acting until he was 45 years old, after a career as a railroad worker for the Union Pacific Railroad. He was born on June 26, 1943. On the 1990 ABC sitcom Brewster Place, starring Oprah Winfrey, he had one of his earliest acting appearances, as Mr. Willie.
From 2002 to 2006, Beasley played Irv Harper, Debra Mooney’s husband on Greg Berlanti’s Everwood, and from 2012 to 2016, he played Barton Harper, another retired pastor, on Berlanti’s The Soul Man.
In addition to his roles on these shows, he has also appeared in episodes of Missing Persons, Early Edition, CSI, Judging Amy, Boston Legal, Treme, and The Mandalorian.
Michael, his son, posted on Facebook, “I lost my best friend today. They say you shouldn’t ever meet your heroes because they don’t turn out to be who you thought they were. That is so wrong. My hero was my father. Thank you for everything.”
Besides his 58-year-old wife Judy, NBA veteran Malik Beasley’s family includes his daughters-in-law Katie and Deena and grandchildren Evan, Miles, Olivia, Mika, Darius, and Malik.
