After months of inquiry, Special Counsel Jack Smith has indicted former President Donald Trump on seven counts of mishandling confidential documents.

On Thursday, former president Jim Trusty’s counsel said that Trump is being investigated for Espionage Act violations, obstruction of justice, destruction or falsification of records, conspiracy, and making false statements.

Former President Trump announced on Truth Social that he had been indicted and summoned to appear at the Federal Courthouse in Miami on Tuesday, at 3 PM. On Thursday night, the special counsel refused to comment.

Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith in November to investigate whether Trump or his advisers broke the law by bringing secret documents to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property after he left office, and whether they obstructed justice in doing so.

Trump’s claims that he automatically declassified everything he took with him to Mar-a-Lago were debunked after several high-profile interviews and testimony from a former White House official who told prosecutors that Trump knew the proper process for declassifying documents and followed it correctly at times while in office.

According to CNN’s reporting earlier this week, the Justice Department notified the former president’s legal team that their client is a target in the investigation, which is generally a precursor to an indictment.

Trump has said he did nothing wrong. His conservative allies have criticized the investigation, calling it a power grab by the federal government.

Trump posted on Truth Social, “The corrupt Biden Administration has informed my attorneys that I have been Indicted, seemingly over the Boxes Hoax.”

However, Smith has overseen investigations into members of both parties, including some of the most high-profile political corruption cases in recent memory, with mixed results. He is currently leading the DOJ’s investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

The special counsel has done things like bring charges against a senator who was still in office and bring cases against gang members who were found guilty of ki!!ing New York City police officers. His career has spanned many stints in the Justice Department and international courts, allowing him to remain relatively low-key in the frequently brash legal sector until his nomination.

From 2010 until 2015, Smith presided over corruption investigations as head of the Justice Department’s public integrity branch, following stints as a local and federal prosecutor and at the International Criminal Court.

The Lead CNN posted an official tweet in which Republican Presidential Candidate Chris Christie talks on the looming indictment of Donald Trump by Special Counsel Jack Smith in the classified documents case.

When Democratic former senator and vice presidential candidate John Edwards was charged in 2014 and Republican former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell was indicted in 2012, Smith was in charge of the area. In addition, he oversaw the investigation into Republican and former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, which he closed in 2010 without filing charges.

In early 2017, Smith became the interim U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee, where he had previously served as an associate U.S. attorney. By the end of that year, he had risen through the ranks to become Hospital Corporation of America’s vice president of litigation.

Smith has spent the better part of the last few years working as the special court’s top prosecutor in The Hague, a position he took up in 2018 while investigating war crimes in Kosovo.
