Iron Man Vs. Hulk: What Happened When the Two Faced Off in the 1994 Series?

Iron Man Vs Hulk

Tony Stark and Bruce Banner are both members of the Avengers, but they regularly find themselves at odds with one another. Iron Man would don the Hulkbuster armor and fight the green mutant in several comic book stories. Their fights were included in a TV series and then again in the feature film version of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

In the animated Iron Man series from 1994, Stark faced off against Banner. Tony, Jessica Carpenter, Bruce, and James Rhodes investigate a weird beam of light in the desert in “Hulk Buster,” the twenty-fourth episode of Season 1.

As soon as this ray of light hits, things begin to vanish, and soon even Jessica is gone. Iron Man, determined to get her back, tracks down the source of the beam and discovers it came from one of The Mandarin’s rings, which Bruce explains can throw whatever they shine on into time rifts.

However, not long after, drones assault Bruce and Iron Man, taking the ring. Bruce reveals that one of his old lab assistants, Samuel Sterns, is the villainous “The Leader” responsible for sending these drones. Samuel became the villain he is now because he was exposed to enormous amounts of gamma radiation before the colleagues separated.

Bruce, Tony, and James hop on a chopper to go after The Leader and retrieve Jessica’s ring. Banner’s temper boils over during the helicopter journey, and he eventually becomes the Hulk, yelling, “Leader must be stopped!”

Hulk jumps from the aircraft and lands on the ground outside The Leader’s hideout. When he walks in, the two old lab partners start fighting. Hulk becomes enraged when the Leader claims that Hulk’s ring will destroy him, and he lashes out, “No one destroys Hulk!” Once he has the ring in his hands, he effortlessly defeats The Leader, throwing him to the ground like a ragdoll.

Iron Man swoops in to stop Hulk from crushing the ring, claiming that he needs the ring to rescue Julia. Because Hulk won’t listen, their struggle over the ring takes them through many points of time, including the moment the G-bomb exploded and Bruce Banner was transformed into the Hulk.

Meanwhile, Julia has arrived. Tony tries to convince Bruce that they can prevent his changing into the Hulk after understanding that they’ve arrived on that day. Hulk, however, does not need weakling Banner and thus resumes his conflict with Iron Man.

James, anticipating that Tony would need some assistance in his fight against Hulk, utilizes a portal to get the Hulkbuster suit to him. While Tony and Hulk are fighting it out, Julia retrieves the ring from Tony’s spare metal arm. Unfortunately, The Leader followed the Hulkbuster through the vortex and kidnapped Julia’s ring.

The Leader, still seething with a vengeance, tries to shoot little Bruce Banner, but Hulk shields him, hoping that Bruce will one day transform into the Hulk. After The Leader and the rings are left behind, James reopens the portal and Tony flies Hulk and Julia back to the present.

Iron Man has faced up against Hulk numerous times across Marvel media. To be specific, he was attempting to assist ex-Bruce Banner and spare him the trauma of ever having to transform into the Hulk. To make matters worse, Tony’s plan failed, and Bruce eventually transformed into the Hulk anyhow.
