It’s a tough situation for Fox News, which has been humiliated in recent months by court documents showing that Tucker Carlson and others at the network didn’t buy into the election fraud conspiracy theories they were peddling to their viewers night after night.
Without a natural successor to Carlson, the channel has an uphill battle to win back viewers and preserve its dominance among right-wing media. One viewer even said they’d “rather watch grass grow” than listen to Kilmeade.
“Short term, I’m sure it will be a challenge, not just because they’ve lost Tucker Carlson, but because there’ll be a backlash amongst his core fans, and the Maga-style Republicans who saw the way that Tucker Carlson was speaking to them, catering to them, and appreciated that,” said Eric Deggans, a TV critic at NPR and author of Race-Baiter: How the Media Wields Dangerous Words to Divide a Nation.
It had never been done before to the extent that Carlson was appealing to his audience. Carlson, a privately schooled multimillionaire with Trump-like instincts, knew just how to frighten and inflame tens of millions of white, immensely resentful, politically right-wing Americans.

“He was normalizing some tenets of white supremacy. So I’m sure there were white supremacists and racists who also loved his show. And they are probably all going to be angry with Fox for a little while,” Deggans said.
“But ultimately, I think Rupert Murdoch and the folks who run Fox realize they are the biggest game in town. They have the largest megaphone, they reach the largest segment of conservative news consumers of just about any media outlet.”
“So at some point, people wind up going back to them. They may be upset for a while, but if Tucker Carlson’s permanent replacement picks up his mantle and starts talking about things the way he did, I think they’ll get those people back.”
Audiences for Newsmax and One America News Network spiked in the days and weeks after Fox News’ call, perhaps due to Donald Trump’s commentary on the matter, but eventually returned in the months that followed.
Hendershot stated Fox News had been through this before with the departures of Bill O’Reilly (the highest rated cable news host) and Glenn Beck (who introduced his cheerful ouevre to Fox News before leaving in 2011).
“Ultimately, they will find a replacement and they’ll be fine,” said Hendershot.
“You can always find stars, and only a few people are genuinely unreplaceable. With most people you can find someone else and develop new talent,” she said.
Hendershot argued that there was just hope. While Fox News does not rely heavily on advertising revenue (the majority of its money comes from contracts with cable companies for the right to air the channel), eliminating Carlson, whom major advertisers have run a mile from in recent years, could increase the network’s revenue.
Media Matters for America reports that Fox News charges $2.18 per viewer for cable networks to air its programming. Fox News’ contracts with some of these organizations are set to expire within the next two years, and Vanity Fair has reported that the network intends to increase its charge to $3, significantly increasing revenue.
Matt Gertz, a senior fellow at Media Matters, has indicated that the departure of Tucker Carlson might be both a lifesaver and a disaster for those talks.
Fox News’ contradiction dilemma is especially pressing now that its audience is angry at Carlson’s departure, according to Gertz, because the channel will have to fight to gain back viewers who have defected to rivals like Newsmax.
