Although the specific circumstances leading to his dismissal are unclear, they follow a string of disturbing allegations made both in public and in private.According to a recent article in Variety, Lemon has been accused of se*ism throughout the vast majority of his career at the network. The now-infamous statements regarding former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley were made by Lemon in February on “CNN This Morning” (he was moved from his prime-time news show in September). He claimed that Haley, at age 51, was well past her prime, as was every woman over the age of 50.
“When I make a mistake, I own it,” Lemon said after that controversy. “And I own this one as well.” As for Variety’s report, in a statement, a spokesperson for Lemon said that it was amazing and disappointing that Variety would be so reckless and that the article which is riddled with patently false anecdotes and no concrete evidence, is entirely based on unsourced, unsubstantiated, 15-year-old anonymous gossip.
In an email to staff in February, CNN CEO Chris Licht stated about Lemon, who had been suspended for his comments regarding Haley, “He has agreed to participate in formal training, as well as continuing to listen and learn.”
While Lemon’s comments about Haley were made months ago, the se*ism claims against him appear to go all the way back to 2006. Here is where things get more complicated.Given that Lemon spent one of his last days at the CNN desk correcting Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy’s falsehoods regarding the civil rights movement, we must also consider the racial dynamics at play. Ramaswamy was spreading the false idea that the NRA fought for Black people’s right to own weapons.
Ramaswamy, the son of Indian immigrants to the United States, gave a startling lecture to Lemon, a queer Black man from the South, about the history of the Black freedom movement.
CNN’s decision to fire Lemon shortly after the interview went viral has contributed to the belief that media executives aren’t interested in hearing from Black people who are critical of racism and of the weapons lobby. Another implication is that a Black male journalist who, in real time, rejects “alternative facts” may be unfairly typecast as “the angry Black man.”
There was a reason why Lemon was so significant to cable TV viewers and Black viewers in particular up until last year. Lemon did more than merely report the news. He also added flair. Videos of him go viral all the time.
