Memphis Basketball Prospect Mikey Williams Is Accused Of Having A Firearm
ESPN reports, Mikey Williams, a highly regarded basketball recruit who had committed to play next year at Memphis, was arrested on Thursday in San Diego on suspicion of assault with a weapon.
Lt. Gavin Lanning of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department confirmed on Friday at 12:14 a.m. that Williams, who is ranked 34th on ESPN’s ranking of the top 100 prospects in the 2023 class, had paid his $50,000 bond and been freed. On Thursday, he will appear in court for the first time.

According to the police report, Williams is being charged with numerous counts of assault with a deadly weapon; however, Lanning expects Williams to just face a single charge. According to California Penal Code Section 245(a)(2), Williams is in violation if “any person who commits an assault upon the person of another with a firearm.” There is a potential maximum penalty of four years for this crime.
Memphis has released a statement saying the city is “aware of the situation and [is] gathering more information.”

The incident report from the sheriff’s office states, “Five people got into a car, and as they were driving away, shots were fired. The car took a hit, but no one was hurt.” After a search warrant was carried out, Williams was taken into custody. There were a number of kids in the car. Sheriff’s officials have stated that they will not disclose Williams’ booking photo because they only do so “when there is an immediate threat to public safety.”
Williams has hired San Diego defense attorney Troy P. Owens. The shooting, according to a statement published by Owens on Friday night, took place at Williams’ house following a “altercation.”
In his statement, Owens stated, “This altercation was initiated by several uninvited individuals entering the home and causing a disturbance. During the aftermath of this disturbance, there were reports of shots being fired. Mr. Williams is alleged to match the description of the shooter. As a result, a search warrant was executed at the home and Mr. Williams was arrested. He has posted bond and looks forward to addressing any allegations against him using the established procedures in our justice system.”
The statement continued, “we ask that people appreciate the fact that Mr. Williams is an 18-year-old high school student. Harassment, threats, or any other behavior of the sort is unwarranted. We are aware of several narratives being advanced online that are not factual and are designed to humiliate Mr. Williams. We are confident that the truth will come to light. Mr. Williams is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
Since Williams’ early high school days, when he became a YouTube phenomenon with his highlight videos, he has been a household figure in the world of grassroots basketball. Before going to Lake Norman Christian (North Carolina), he was recognized as the 2019-20 MaxPreps national freshman basketball player of the year while attending San Ysidro.
At the time of his commitment to Memphis, he had roughly 4 million Instagram followers and more than 2 million TikTok fans. With his multiyear endorsement deal with Puma, Williams made history in October 2021 as the first American high school basketball player to sign with a major international sneaker brand.
Williams, a 6-foot-2 guard, was a prized pick for Penny Hardaway’s next recruiting class. Williams considered playing for a historically black college a few years ago, but finally decided to join the Tigers instead. In November, he committed to playing for Hardaway’s team by signing a letter of intent.
Williams’ arrest is the latest in a string of gun-related problems that have rocked college basketball this year.
