The ‘Rust’ Sh00ting Charge Against Alec Baldwin Has Been Withdrawn
The involuntary mansla^ghter accusations against Alec Baldwin for the 2021 shooting de@th of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins while filming of the Western film “Rust” were dropped on Thursday by prosecutors in New Mexico, as reported by Reuters.
An insider said the decision was made when more information became available about the rifle Baldwin was using when he acc*dentally sh0t and ki!!ed Hutchins. Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film’s weapons handler, was also charged with involuntary mansla^ghter, and her trial will continue, according to a statement released by state prosecutors.
According to special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis, “new facts were revealed that demand further investigation and forensic analysis. We will therefore be dismissing the involuntary manslaughter charges against Mr. Baldwin.”
But they also said, “This decision does not absolve Mr. Baldwin of criminal culpability and charges may be refiled.”
Baldwin and the rest of the group returned to Montana to continue filming on the same day that a dramatic development in the 18-month-old case occurred.
It was announced earlier on Thursday by Baldwin attorneys Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, and confirmed by prosecutors. In an Instagram post on Thursday, Baldwin honored his wife Hilaria and said, “I owe everything I have to this woman (and to you, Luke).”
After a fatal acc*dent on set on October 21, 2021, outside Santa Fe, New Mexico, Baldwin, 65, and Gutierrez-Reed, 25, were charged with two counts of involuntary mansla^ghter in January. Baldwin’s rehearsal with a Colt.45 weapon resulted in the de@th of Hutchins and the injury of the film’s director, Joel Souza.
Gutierrez-Reed’s attorneys Jason Bowles and Todd Bullion said in a statement on Thursday, “We fully expect at the end of this process that Hannah will also be exonerated.”
At first, Baldwin was blamed for Hutchins’ de@th because of his “reckless” behavior. Video footage, according to the prosecution, allegedly shows him placing his finger on the weapon’s trigger minutes before it discharges a live cartridge. The weapon, according to Baldwin, was “cold,” a phrase used in the business to indicate that it did not contain ammunition with an explosive charge, and he never used it.
A source familiar with the investigation told us that after analyzing the evidence last week, it became clear that the Italian weapon maker Pietta had modified the reproduction long Colt.45 “Peacemaker” weapon Baldwin was using.
“It was definitely modified, which compromises the whole argument that the gun was in fully functioning operating form and could only have fired if Baldwin pulled the trigger.”
The state’s prosecution has had a lot of problems with the law. In February, the most serious charge against the defendants was dropped, and two attorneys had to leave their jobs.
