Gwyneth Paltrow Testifies In The Ski Collision Trial In Utah

On Friday, actress Gwyneth Paltrow took the stand to testify in a Utah trial about a 2016 snow skiing accident. Over the course of about two hours of testimony, she painted a picture of how she saw what happened.

The actress and businesswoman has been in the courtroom since the trial started on Tuesday, when the lawyers for Paltrow and Terry Sanderson, a 76-year-old retired optometrist, gave their opening statements to the jury.

Sanderson says that Paltrow crashed into him while they were both skiing on a beginner’s run on a Utah mountain in February 2016. He says that the accident left him with permanent injuries and brain damage. Sanderson also says that Paltrow and her ski instructor left the man without getting him medical help after the accident.

In 2019, Paltrow sued Sanderson again, saying that he skied into her. The two have been in court for seven years.

In The Ongoing Ski Collision Trial, Gwyneth Paltrow Takes The Stand

According to CNN, Paltrow took the stand just before 3 p.m. local time, and Sanderson’s lawyer, Kristin A. VanOrman, asked her questions. The founder of Goop said that she was skiing with her two kids, her then-boyfriend Brad Falchuk, and his two kids on the day of the accident with Sanderson.

Paltrow said that the trip was the first time she and her now-husband Falchuk met each other’s children. They did this to see if they could work as a “blended family.” She said that the accident took place on the first day of their trip to Deer Valley Resort.

Paltrow said that all of the kids, who were about the same age, were taking ski lessons on the day of the crash. She said in court that she didn’t remember how much the lessons cost, but that they cost several thousand dollars, plus tips.

Paltrow said “yes” when asked if she left good tips. Paltrow then said again that Sanderson skied right into her back, which caused the accident.

“Yes, he hit me in the back, that’s exactly what happened,” Paltrow said as the lawyer read from a deposition some of what she had said about what happened.

At one point, VanOrman wanted to use Paltrow in a courtroom reenactment of the ski crash. However, the judge turned down the idea, so VanOrman had to act out the scene herself.

Paltrow said in court that during and right after the crash with Sanderson, she was trying to figure out what was going on. She said Sanderson was making grunting sounds.

She said in court on Friday that two skis came between hers and pushed her legs apart. Then, she said, “I felt a body press against me and heard a very strange grunting sound.”

Based on what Paltrow said about what happened, VanOrman walked around the courtroom to try to show where the skis were and where Paltrow and Sanderson were standing. Paltrow said that she froze because she didn’t know if what was happening was an accident or not.

After the accident, Paltrow said she was sorry for swearing and yelling at Sanderson. “I was very upset, and what had happened was still very strange to me,” she said. “I was very angry at what had happened.”

She said that after the accident, her knee felt “overstretched” and her back hurt, but she didn’t go to the doctor. Instead, she got a massage.

When asked later if she believed Sanderson’s friend Craig Ramon, who was on the slopes the day of the accident and testified Tuesday, Paltrow said she didn’t. Sanderson’s legal team says that Ramon is the only person who saw the accident happen.

Court documents show that Sanderson first sued Paltrow for $3.1 million, but he later changed his complaint and is now asking for more than $300,000 in damages. Paltrow is asking for $1 in damages and attorney fees.

VanOrman Also Asked If Paltrow Is Freinds With Taylor Swift Or Not?

VanOrman asked Paltrow if she wanted $1 because of a case involving singer-songwriter Taylor Swift whose official Instagram handle is @taylorswift in 2017. Paltrow said she didn’t know about Swift’s case at the time. VanOrman asked, “Are you good friends with Taylor Swift?” Paltrow said “No” in response.

She also said, “I would not say we’re good friends. We are friendly. I’ve taken my kids to one of her concerts before, but we don’t talk very often.”

In 2017, the singer won a lawsuit against radio host David Mueller, who she said had touched her inappropriately at a meet-and-greet in June 2013. Mueller had to pay $1 to make up for the damage.

VanOrman asked Paltrow if the damages she was asking for were just for show. Paltrow said, “It’s symbolic because the damages would actually be more.” Paltrow’s lawyers asked her if she felt bad for Sanderson when she was being questioned. “You know, I really do,” Paltrow said.

“I feel very sorry for him. It seems like he’s had a very difficult life, but I did not cause the accident so I cannot be at fault for anything that subsequently happened to him,” she said in court.
