The revelation that a Freaknik documentary will soon be available on Hulu coincides with students’ spring break plans. This Monday, Hulu added Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told to its collection of documentaries, as first reported by Variety. For the uninitiated, “Freaknik” refers to a festival held in Atlanta, Georgia around spring break, which is primarily attended by students from HBCUs.
In 1983, the DC Metro club, a student organization, hosted the first “Freaknik,” which was just a picnic at a public park near the Atlanta University Center for students who could not afford to go home for spring break. By the mid-1990s, the gathering had expanded into a full-fledged block party with live music, vendors, street food, and more as its popularity grew. The city banned and actively opposed the festival by 1999, but 2019 sees its return.
Subscribers to Hulu will soon be able to hear firsthand accounts of those wild and insane block parties from folks who were actually there. Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told is executive produced by Jermaine Dupri, Luther Campbell, Peter Bittenbender, Melissa Cooper, Eric Tomosunas for Swirl Films, Terry Ross, Alex Avant, and showrunner Geraldine L. Porras. The film was directed by P Frank Williams. Jay Allen and Nikki Byles are the producers.

Thanks to photographer Shelia Turner, the year 1994 (aka Freaknik ’94) is thoroughly documented. Hulu’s synopsis hinted that the documentary might premiere in 2024, the year that would mark Freaknik’s 40th anniversary. Yet, this is all assumption. Keep checking back with Hulu for updates on Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told.
