He attended Luther Rice Seminary for his doctorate after earning master’s and bachelor’s degrees in theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and the University of Richmond, respectively.
In 1969, he became a member of the First Baptist Church in Atlanta, and by 1971, he was serving as the senior pastor. In 1972, he started a thirty-minute church show called The Chapel Hour. In 1978, the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) began airing the show. In 1982, he established In Touch Ministries, a radio ministry whose syndicated broadcast eventually reached nearly every major American media market.

Andy Stanley, his son, eventually joined the community of Atlanta’s largest congregation. He presently serves as pastor of Alpharetta, Georgia’s North Point Community Church. His interpretation of the scriptures was unique in comparison to his father’s.
