Teofimo Lopez, 25 years old, is retiring from boxing. On Sunday morning, after stunningly defeating Josh Taylor, Lopez abruptly announced his retirement on social media.
Lopez returned to form against Taylor, easily winning a majority decision and reclaiming the WBO and The Ring light welterweight championships he had lost in December after a lackluster performance against Sandor Martin. After his victory, Lopez gave hints that he would retire from boxing soon.
Did Teofimo Lopez Retire From Boxing?
Lopez recently said, “I need to take a break,” as reported by ESPN’s Michael Rothstein. “I’m tired of everybody bullying me. I’m young. I’m a kid, too, at heart. I think y’all need to go after the Devin Haneys, the Shakurs, the Tyson Furys and all that.”
Keep in mind that this is a boxing retirement, and that first retirements are notoriously short-lived. Lopez, who is only 25, sounded like a tired boxer who had been overwhelmed by the attention he had received since his battle with Martin. After his loss against George Kambosos Jr., he was no longer seen as one of the sport’s emerging stars, and he was visibly affected by the criticism of his fights.
Lopez, who was an underdog against Taylor on Saturday night, said he was fine with that.
Lopez reportedly said, “I’m tired of everybody bullying me. I’m young. I’m a kid, too, at heart. I think y’all need to go after the Devin Haneys, the Shakurs, the Tyson Furys and all that. And I like against all odds. I like when I question myself. I do it on purpose. I need the pressure on me because that’s what makes diamonds. And tonight, I shined very bright tonight.”
Recently, Nasir Adderley has also announced his retirement. To know the reasons behind his decision, head on to the link below:
With a perfect record of 19-0, Taylor was widely regarded as an invincible force in the light-welterweight division. He hadn’t fought since beating Jack Catterall by split decision in February 2022, and his restricted schedule in recent years raises questions about ring rust.
However, it seems unlikely that Taylor will get a rematch very soon. Sky Sports Boxing posted an official tweet in which Teofimo Lopez says he needs a break and will consider hanging up his gloves because he doesn’t get loved enough.

Lopez claimed that he had spent the past several years doubting his own greatness after being dubbed “The Takeover” for his meteoric ascent to fame, but that he is now satisfied with his place as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world and is ready to retire.
Certainly for the time being.
