I had just moved to New York City to make it my permanent home when the scent was released, so the memory is really clear to me. I had just started in my chosen field. I’ll never forget how enthusiastic he was about the bottle, and how he’d spray it all over the showroom whenever we came in for alterations. By that time, Calvin was famous for his extraordinary campaigns.

People paid close attention to the Calvin scent advertising since they were so significant and unique. Speculating on Eternity’s strategy for this campaign was also a lot of fun. We spent over a month on set, and the final product was a sequence of 10 advertisements that formed an overarching narrative.

Their director, Richard Avedon, oversaw a stellar cast and crew. Many new things were shown to me. As far as I could tell at the time, I was the only person to have ever experienced it. It was unlike any other campaign shoot I’d done before or since.

We photographed the first commercial picture campaign on Martha’s Vineyard with a group of incredible kids, some of whom I’ve been in touch with for decades. Everything about [that] day—the attire, the weather, and everyone who was there—stands out in my mind. That was a one-of-a-kind experience.
