The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States put out a statement on Monday to warn people about Candida Auris, a new fungus.
Based on information collected by the CDC, Candida Auris is seen as an urgent threat to antimicrobial resistance (AR). In 2020 and 2021, it spread at an alarming rate in hospitals and clinics in the US.
The press release read, “Equally concerning was a tripling in 2021 of the number of cases that were resistant to echinocandins, the antifungal medicine most recommended for treatment of Candida Auris infections.”
“In general, Candida Auris is not a threat to healthy people. People who are very sick, have invasive medical devices, or have long or frequent stays in healthcare facilities are at increased risk for acquiring Candida Auris.”
“CDC has deemed Candida Auris as an urgent AR threat, because it is often resistant to multiple antifungal drugs, spreads easily in healthcare facilities, and can cause severe infections with high death rates.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that manpower and equipment shortages at healthcare facilities as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic may have slowed the spread of disease in 2021.

What Are The Symptoms Of Candida Auris?
According to the CDC’s warning, high fever and chills that do not improve with antibiotic treatment are symptoms of Candida Auris. They also emphasized the fact that the infection can migrate to other organs and cause new symptoms to appear.
Dr. Meghan Lyman, an epidemiologist at the CDC and the paper’s lead author, said, “The rapid rise and geographic spread of cases is concerning and emphasizes the need for continued surveillance, expanded lab capacity, quicker diagnostic tests, and adherence to proven infection prevention and control.” You can check the official tweet by BFM News below in which a deadly fungal infection is spreading through the US at an alarming rate.
