It was reported by LA Weekly that Murphy was let go from the set of the final film she would ever film in November 2009 because of Monjack’s drunken appearance. On December 20 of the following month, she suddenly became unwell and passed away within a few hours of returning to her house.
Brittany’s mom Sharon and her husband Simon stayed together and continued to live together after her death, and Simon made a strange appearance on Larry King’s Life to argue that an autopsy wasn’t necessary. Their actions sparked rumors of a conspiracy surrounding Brittany’s death, which added to the shock of the incident.
Murphy died from pneumonia, iron deficiency anemia, and various drug poisoning, according to the autopsy report. However, fans and true crime experts have speculated that other factors, such as mold growing in Brittany’s home or poison administered by her mother or husband, may have contributed to her death rather than pneumonia.
The death of Simon Monjack on May 23, 2010, from pneumonia and anemia, added more intrigue to the case than Brittany’s death had. His age was given as 39.

After Murphy’s father filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office and the Los Angeles Police Department in 2012, the lab performed toxicology testing on her hair and found that it contained dangerous amounts of lead, but that the lead came from her hairspray or hair dye.
During the autopsy, neither lead nor mold spores were found in her system. According to the coroner questioned in the show, Brittany would have had a better chance of survival if she had been sent to the hospital when she first started experiencing symptoms of pneumonia and breathing difficulties, days before her death.
Sharon, Murphy’s mother, has retreated into her world following her daughter’s death. After Simon passed away, she was left with very little money since she tried to sell diamond jewelry he had manufactured for her but discovered they were all phony.
In the brief years he was married to Murphy and had access to her assets, Monjack squandered $3 million. He convinced Murphy’s sisters, Sharon and Brittany, that he was wisely investing their money by inventing bogus property titles and jewels.
