Bobby Darin was a famous musician and actor from the United States. He played various genres of music including jazz, pop, rock and roll, folk, swing, and country. His first job was writing songs for Connie Francis, which launched his career. In 1958, he recorded “Splish Splash,” which went on to become his first hit to sell one million copies.
What Happened To Bobby Darin?
Bobby Darin, whose boldness, attractiveness, and brilliance made him one of the country’s top singers of popular tunes, passed away today at the age of 37. He had been plagued by heart problems for much of his life, as per The New York Times.
The singer had open-heart surgery at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital yesterday. Two prosthetic heart valves were inserted by doctors in 1971. Yesterday, he underwent a six-hour procedure due to valve dysfunction, but the team of four surgeons operating on him concluded that he was “just too weak to, recover.”
Following the wishes of his will, his body was donated to the University of California for medical study. Fighting his way out of the Bronx’s rough neighborhoods, Bobby Darin eventually became a multimillionaire. He made it clear that he would become a legend before he turned 25, and he almost did.
At the age of 24, he had already become a national nightclub sensation, signed $2 million worth of movie contracts, and married his 18-year-old Hollywood leading lady, Sandra Dee. In addition to being nominated for an Academy Award for his role in “Captain Newman, M.D.” and having four albums sell over a million copies, he also won two Grammys.

A mention of Frank Sinatra’s two Grammy wins prompted the singer to say, “I hope to pass Frank in everything he’s done.” At least with respect to this, he did not.
Mr. Darin recently remarked: “I didn’t make it [becoming a legend], and I never will. My goal is unattainable. I’m trying to accomplish something, but don’t know what it is. I must be running away from a lot of things.”
Mr. Darin was christened Walden Robert Cassoto and was born in a tough area of the Bronx. According to the son, his father was a minor criminal who had passed away before the boy was born. The mother and child relied on welfare. Mr. Darin attended high school, played the drums, and performed at summer camps in the Catskills before dropping out of Hunter College.
His life revolved around music, and in May of 1958, he released an album featuring a song called “Splish Splash,” which he reportedly wrote in just 12 minutes. Darin chose the name for the first time from a phone book and it stuck. In just three weeks, the record sold a hundred thousand copies, making the kid a teen sensation.
Mr. Darin’s career took off in the 1960s after he recorded “Mack the Knife,” a song in which he imitated Louis Armstrong’s singing style. He became a household name after selling two million copies of the album that earned him Grammys for best song and best new artist of the year. His original compositions “Early in the Morning” and “Dream Lover” were also recorded and became hits. Comedian George Burns helped promote his appearances at Las Vegas nightclubs. He also frequently appeared on television.
His debut film was 1960’s “Come September,” starring Miss Dee. They tied the knot in 1960, and in 1962, their son Dodd was born. They split up in 1963, reconciled, and then divorced the following year. Mr. Darin recently married legal secretary Andrea Joy Yeager in June. When he passed away, they had already been apart for a while.
Mr. Darin’s career had been on the decline in recent years, but a year ago he started making a comeback with performances in Las Vegas and his own television show.
